MOTHERHOOD IS NOT A MONOLITH,
IT IS A LANDSAPE
The Brown Mama Monologues is redefining the American motherhood narrative to be more inclusive of the stories of black mothers. Our annual showcase has told the stories of over 50 African-American mothers to-date. Amplifying the voices and lived experiences of black mothers adds diversity, depth and variety to the story we tell ourselves about what it means to be a mother in America.
Welcome to the
Brown Mama Monologues
Virtual Showcase:
In May 2023, six mothers took to the stage to give voice to their experiences of parenting and living-in-color. On November 1, 2023, you will get to hear from them raw and unfiltered.
With a backdrop of music, the laughter and "Amens" of the crowd and surrounded by support, our mamas are excited to present their trials and triumphs first-hand during our virtual showcase.
From workplace discrimination to childhood abuse and the ups and downs of first-time entrepreneurship, our mamas have dynamic stories to tell.
Muffy Mendoza is the founder and Executive Director of Brown Mamas and Executive Producer of the Brown Mama Monologues.
Storytelling has been at the heart of her journey. She started the Brown Mamas community by capturing the passion Black women have for parenting with the #GoodMama Campaign that challenged the perceptions of Black moms in the Pittsburgh region and beyond.
That campaign has translated into a super successful full-scale production that honors the experiences of Black women through storytelling.
Storytelling has been at the heart of Muffy’s journey. She started the Brown Mamas community by capturing the passion Black women have for parenting with the #GoodMama Campaign that challenged the perceptions of Black moms in the Pittsburgh region and beyond.
With the help of her tribe, friends and family members, she was able to shepherd a community of over 6,000 moms in the Pittsburgh region. Through helping these women connect with one another, Muffy grew stronger in her ability to communicate their stories and share her own talent of crafting heartfelt, meaningful messages.
MEET THE MAMAS
In 2023, the Brown Mama Monologues hosted the heartfelt and truthful stories of six unique storytellers. Coming from Pittsburgh, Detroit and Philadelphia, these women spent 6 months putting pen to paper and crafting their unique stories. On November 1st their on-stage dynamic, both individually and collectively, will shine like no other.
